Who We Are
Based in Brisbane on Jagera / Yuggara and Turrbal country, Footnote is a community of people who want to discuss and analyse the world with an awareness of how the past effects the present. It was founded in 2020 to showcase the work of early career historians, students, and creatives.
We focus on academic essays but also run articles, interviews, reviews, and other writing on history. We publish Summer and Winter editions to coincide with our local academic semesters. A shortlist selected by our editorial board is published in print biannually.
Footnote Journal is published by the University of Queensland History Society. Our operations are made possible with funding from the Society, student grants, and donations, as well as the volunteer efforts of our editorial board and partners.

When We Publish
Our MissionFootnote Journal is a space for what lingers at the edges of history. Like a footnote, we are drawn to the details that deepen and reshape how we understand the past beyond the main text.
We publish work that is attentive, curious, and open across disciplines, histories, and forms, and we value writing that unsettles and expands established narratives.
We believe the margins are not incidental. They are where meaning gathers and perspectives shift.
